Men’s Twilight League

Men’s Twilight League at Newport Country Club

Welcome to Newport Country Club Men’s League 2025!

Eligibility: All players must be members at Newport Country Club and have an active GHIN in order to participate in Men’s League.

Format: Nine-hole fourball match play. Teams will be split into two flights based on combined team handicap index at the start of league play: A blue flight  and a white flight. Teams will play one nine-hole match each Tuesday night against another team in their flight in round-robin style. We will alternate which flight plays the front nine and which flight plays the back nine every week. Each hole is worth two points: A win is worth 2 points, a half is 1 point, a loss is 0 points. Points will be accumulated over two half seasons: 5/13-7/1 and 7/8-8/26. All USGA Rules of Golf shall otherwise apply.

Handicaps: Players will receive 100% of their course handicap. Strokes will be zeroed off of the low handicap in the match. No player shall receive more than one handicap stroke per hole.

Substitutes: In the event that your partner cannot play in any given week, it is your responsibility to find a substitute. All substitutes must have a valid GHIN handicap. Please give advance notice to the pro shop of your team’s intention to play with a substitute so that handicap strokes can be adjusted on the scorecard accordingly. The golf shop will not be maintaining a directory of substitutes. If you cannot find a substitute to play with, you may still play by yourself against your opponents.

No-Shows: No-showing any given week is considered extremely inconsiderate to your opponents as well as the rest of the field. Any team that no-shows will automatically receive 0 points for that week. The accrual of three no-shows will result in your team being immediately removed from Men’s League and replaced with a team off of the waiting list. It may also result in one or both of your players being banned from Men’s League for a full year.

There is a new competitive procedure this year for dealing with no-shows:

  • If there is an even number of no-shows on a given night, teams will be re-paired so as to create an even number of matches. This may result in a team from the white flight playing a team from the blue flight if an odd number of no-shows occur in each flight.
  • If there is an odd number of no-shows on a given night, the team left without an opponent shall play a match against Head Golf Professional Will Jones. The pro will play from the blue tees off of a 0 course handicap, while his opponents will receive their full strokes from whichever tees they normally play from. The odd-team-out will retain any points they win against the pro. Players will note that the pro is an extremely competitive fellow whose loyalty cannot be bought under any circumstances.

Course Setup/Tees: All players in the blue flight will play from the blue tees. All players in the white flight will pay from the white tees. All men 65 years of age or older will have the option to play from the gold tees, regardless of what flight they are in, but they must declare before the start of each half season whether or not they intend to do so and will play from the tees they select for that entire half season.

Entry: Season dues are $65/player, to be paid on Tuesday, May 13th prior to the start of competition. Each week there will be an optional $10/team cash skins game, as well as Closest-to-the-Pin competitions on all Par 3’s.

Prizes: Each week’s cash skins game will be paid out that evening once the last group comes in. The top ten teams by total points won in each flight will be paid out in shop credit at the end of each half season. All Closest-to-the-Pin contests will pay out $20 in shop credit.

Tee times: All play will start in shotgun format at 5:15pm. The first week of play will start at 5:30pm to allow time for the collection of annual league dues.
